Small World or the Aquarium – DM Notes

As the ghouls begin to approach Sariel and Seebo from their revealed hiding place, the party begins to swap out members that are able to traverse the copper hallway.  It doesn’t take much for ghoul threat to be overcome with really only the psyche, and perhaps the dignity, of Seebo retreat taking a hit.  Several members of the party attempt to find some sort of deactivation switch in the room formerly occupied by the ghouls.  Finding nothing, and after some brainstorming, the party figures out that they can move their metallic belongings on Dennis’ floating disc to bypass the effects of the copper hallway.

Moving on up some stairs, the party leaves behind the receding waters of the caverns to discover their next obstacle.  Entering a long hallway they find a roughly fifty foot long floor with a shiny sheen bordered on both ends by two pits.  The pit closest to them looks to be only ten feet deep, but they catch glints of metal at the bottom.  A handful of ball bearings from Seebo skitter across and fall into the far pit.  EKIM sends Rehtnap across the first pit, and the party watches him fail to find grip to the floor before falling into the far pit.  After a yelp of pain Rehthnap is able to climb onto the surface of the far end.  Next up is Belgwyn tied to the end of a rope.  Not making the straightest of jumps she finds herself bouncing off the walls until the party stops her advancement several feet short of the far pit.  She also finds herself unable to move but maintains her balance.  Seebo pulls her back only to have her fall into the near pit before climbing out with a couple of new scratches from the metal shards in the bottom.

Their next idea is for EKIM to shoot an arrow tied to the end of the rope across the room to see if they can anchor it on the far side.  Aiming true, he sends the bolt.  The far wall is just at the edge of their vision, and they can’t quite see if it found purchase.  They do notice that the rope falls slack as if not anchored.  Seebo, thinking he has the solution, pulls out his pole and vaults across the first pit.  With the nimbleness, he is able to use the pole to also vault the far pit.  Once on the far end he is able to see that the rope EKIM shot across is nowhere to be seen and the rope disappears into the wall.  Trying to feel the wall he stumbles forward into a more hallway, realising the first wall was an illusion.  Finding the true end of the hallway he secures the rope and the rest of the party is able to use the rope to guide themselves across the hallway without further incident.

Moving deeper into the caves Tobin’s Revenge is presented with a decision.  To the right of the first intersection they come to, the group finds a room with a floating stream of water.  Sitting two feet off the ground, there is a three foot deep stream flowing left to right.  In the room are six two-person canoes with no paddles.  To the left of the intersection they discover a large room of unique design.  Shaped like the inside of an upside-down step pyramid they find alternating levels of water and terrestrial enclosures full of various creatures.  Finding giant crayfish, giant scorpions, sea lions, and finally manticores in the base.  In the bottom with the manticores, they see a doorway leading under the sea lion enclosure on the level above.

Taking into account how spent some of the party is, the group debates between rest, a boat ride, or the zoo.  Opting for the zoo, they enter the room to the left and fan out.  The crayfish and scorpions immediately start to congregate at along the edge the party now stands.  Quickly the party feels the fastest way to deal with the creatures is to break the glass holding the water of the crayfish.  EKIM sends off a few bolts, eventually breaking the glass on the far side.  The flood of water takes out the scorpions immediately and sends the cray fish down into second level, the water being held back by another layer of glass that separates the scorpions from the top of the sea lions’ enclosure.  The manticores don’t take kindly to the aggression shown by the adventures and retaliate by flinging spikes from their tales at EKIM.  Things then move quickly.  Some party members continue to assault the glass in an attempt to potentially drown the manticores in the bottom.  Others focus their ranged attacks on the various creatures.  The glass of the scorpion enclosure is first to break, sending all the water to the lower levels, leaving about a foot of water above the scorpion enclosure floor and allowing the creatures access to all but the top two levels.  The party also realizes that something is holding the water back from going through the door at the bottom of the enclosures.

The slaughter of the creatures continues as the manticores try in vain to hit the fanning out adventurers on the top level.  Seebo and Belgwyn decide to drop down into the empty crayfish enclosure and start to work their way through the near glass, though only Belgwyn is successful in breaking anything.  Groz also makes a move and leaps down into the shallow water of the scorpion enclosure to take on the creatures face-to-face.  After some time all the creatures of the room fall to the party’s attacks.

Needing a place to think, maybe rest, Dennis splits the waters and allows the party to pass through the door at the bottom of the enclosure.  Letting go of his spell once all are on the other side and closing the door the party finds themselves in a short hallway leading to another door.  Feeling the safety of the pool of water behind them, the party is now split on resting or pushing forward through the unknown beyond the door in front of them.
