The dust begins to clear from the explosive entry of the dead griffon now blocking the door. Outside the side windows several of the party observe the rest of the Griffon Calvary in battle with a green dragon and far off in the distance a large silver figure is orbited by numerous smaller dots. From the balcony the second voice roars in draconic, only understood by EKIM, “They are here!” The first returns the news calling on Pellix and Karrathex to assist Voaraghamanthar, calling for “No more mistakes. Let the humans drive out the murders.” The shock of the last few moments is passing and several members of Tobin’s Revenge now recognize the leader of the dragons as Arauthator, the White Death.
The group wastes no time and presses an assault on the black dragon out on the balcony. Hitting it an assortment of ranged attacks and locking it down with an Entangled spell from Sariel. As the situation starts to unfold the party is split. Sariel, Belgwyn, and Seebo are on the balcony with the black dragon and the new addition of a white dragon. The rest of the party has been pinned inside the office by a line of cultists dropping from the ceiling. Outside the door in the hallway there are voices and bodies attempting to force through the griffon blocked doors. The party remains confident and believes they can take out the threat, pushing harder.
Belgwyn aided by Seebo with flight once again slashes away at Voaraghamanthar with her dragon slaying sword while Sariel, bouncing back and forth on the back of the dragons as a distraction, focuses on the white dragon with Seebo. Assistance from EKIM and Dennis come from the far side of the office while Hupp and Divad hold the line of cultists from swarming the office fully. The arrival of a third dragon, a red, marks a turn in the battle. Belgwyn begins to take a beating from Voaraghamanthar but continues to return the favor fiercely. Seebo and Sariel find themselves in a bit of a pickle trying to handle the white dragon’s returns. The dragons almost seem like they are toying with their prey, knowing something the group doesn’t. Instead of taking to the sky for advantage, they stand their ground hitting as hard as they can and even attempting to knock their assailants off the balcony.
Dennis, seeing Seebo struggling to hold back the tide, has an idea and polymorphs the gnome into large rhinoceros. A strategic move, but lacking the awareness of the tight quarters the gnome is fighting in. There is no room for another large body on the balcony, and Seebo begins to fall away over the balcony edge. But, he uses this to his advantage. Falling some 20 feet before casting fly on himself, Seebo turns a potential disaster into a surging charge attack. Glancing off the white dragon, he positions himself above it for his next opportunity. Meanwhile Belgwyn begins to lose her advantage with the black dragon and finds herself only keeping consciousness because of the rage welling within.
Sariel sees the writing on the wall. Two dragons engaged, a third just waiting for an opportunity, and at least one more out of sight, she understands that escape is the only way they will survive. She activates the ring and calls out for help to the Dark Walkers. Meramin returns the message and says she’s getting Tethren and to just hold out as long as they can. Moments later Meramin returns the sending from her end saying that they are inbound, need to get together, and by no means resist when the time comes. She makes a tactical retreat back into the office, but not before taking one last slash from the white dragon. The dragon’s other attacks knock Seebo out of his polymorphed form and unconscious upon impact with the ground at the end of his fall. Well placed ranged attacks finish off the immense job Belgwyn made on the black dragon. The black dragon tumbles off the balcony edge only to be replaced by a fourth dragon, this time blue. The party now realizes the full danger of this attack on Waterdeep.
As the tattoo warms Sariel’s arm and begins to glow, she makes a last ditch effort to stave off the end of her friends with a well timed casting of mass cure wounds. The group inside ends the immediate threat of cultists inside the office. Collecting themselves for the next attack the debris in the room begins to swirl into two circles before a blinding flash announces the appearance of their reinforcements. As the light fades a tiefling and a halfling stand amongst fading ethereal flames. Tethren looks around, acknowledgement that the situation is much worse than he thought, pivots to defense. He summons a metallic dragon spirit out on the balcony to deal with the dragons outside and then, breaking a ceramic like tile from his belt, casts darkness in the wall opening. Meramin follows up with her on tile, further healing the entire party before the color drains from her form and spectral forms begin to circle around her immediate area.
The party has moments to gather and make their escape. The call for their fellow adventurers stuck on the other side of the magical darkness. Belgwyn and Hupp, having made a dash out to help the fallen Seebo, are able to follow the voices of their friends calling from inside the office. Seebo, with the assistance of the several blink dogs Sariel had summoned, finds himself opening his eyes to the pitch black darkness of Tethren’s spell. He is unable to discern his surroundings between the noises of the dragons battling and the disorientation of recovering from the last blow he took. He attempts to light his way by igniting his gloves, but in magical darkness, not even they can show him the way.
The time to go is now, but they can’t leave Seebo behind. Tethren stops Sariel as she ties rope around herself in a rescue attempt before disappearing into the shroud of darkness himself. Inside the darkness he finds the gnome ready for anything. Before Seebo can react he is tackled by the tiefling, falling into a portal on the ground, and both step into the office in the middle of the group. Seebo’s punches hit only air as Tethren orients to the whole group. Taking one more desperate glance around, he looks at Meramin before saying, “I’m sorry, but everything will be alright.” The plane shift spell surges through the entire party, not one resisting its effects.
Aside from Sariel and Meramin, not one member of Tobin’s Revenge has experienced travel between planes outside a physical portal. Time and space strangely slow and speed up simultaneously. Each of their forms, their essence, is instantaneously condensed into an infinitely small ball of energy before rocketing from the office. The travelers are aware of both known and unknown places, times past, present, and future together. Whether the journey takes seconds or years is incomprehensible and differently experienced by each person. As fast as their beings compressed they explode back into being, each a nano cosmic explosion. They stand around a large oak tree in the midday sun. Most feel queasy, some lose the contents of their stomach onto the ground. They have escaped their predicament but are short one tiefling as they look around.
Belgwyn alone was somehow able to witness the final moments in the office by focusing on that moment amongst the plethora of windows that passed on the journey. She heard Tethren’s words to Meramin and saw him release the spell. Just moments before the spell’s energy took the group she noticed that the red and orange cloudiness new to Tethren’s eyes had vanished, returning to the dark black pits she remembers from long ago. His form fails to change like the rest. As he turns his eyes skyward, watching his friends disappear to safety, looking both sad and happy at the same time. The office walls begin to shake as a deafening rumbling noise blocks out all other sounds. The late afternoon light turns red and darkens before suddenly turning a piercing white. Belgwyn is unable to hold the moment any longer before landing in the courtyard.
Looking around, Tobin’s Revenge takes relief of their escape. That is all except the lone Dark Walker. Meramin begins to mumble about not knowing where they were, it was too fast, it was too many. She locks eyes with Sariel, seeing a locket in the hand Tethren grabbed to cast his spell through. The color drains from her face and neck before lashing out “Where is it?!?” Sariel feels a racking of sound building in her mind, but withstands the psychic onslaught. Before she can react, a familiar voice admonishes Meramin for the outburst in this place. The whole group turns to find Thessalindra standing in the doorway to the courtyard, clearly surprised, and maybe angered, at the actions of the halfling. Meramin breaks away to a corner of the courtyard alone, pulling out an object from one of her pockets. Sariel looks at the locket now in her hand. She recognizes it as the one she filled with dirt from Arkalis’ home and gave to Tethren to remember his past. Opening the locket, she finds it is no longer filled with dirt but a small multicolored gem. Also inside is now an inscription, “Anything can change.”
The rest of the group questions Thessa about the safety of the city and shop. She is confused, but not entirely, as she explains that the dragon attack on Waterdeep was two days ago. She tells the group that the wing of the palace where their office was had been destroyed in an unexplained powerful magic spell. The whole of the city has assumed the worst and considered all of Tobin’s Revenge lost in the fallout. She also lets them know that as far as the rumors were concerned, all the dragons at the palace fell in the same instance. There was nothing left other than rubble from the adjoining parts of the palace. No remains, no evidence of what happened.
Taking in this new information from Thessa, the party is surprised by another outburst from Meramin in her isolated corner. “What do you mean there is another one?” before she rushes past Thessa into the shop. “I think you all need some tea,” says Thessa as she steps aside and gestures welcoming to the warm interior of the Silver Bough.
