The Trident of White Plume Mountain – DM Notes

The moment the door opens, a bolt impacts Groz in the shoulder while Lucius is hit with a blast of magical fire from within the room.  Inside the room the armour male and female mage await for the party’s next move.  Cleaning the large door frame it does not take long for party members to spill in for close quarter combat.  The armoured male falls before he can get a second shot off from his crossbow.  Enraged, the body of the female mage grows and distorts as she takes on her true werewolf form.  Not fearing the beast the party quickly vanquishes the werewolf without much more effort.  Having taken care of the occupants, the party explores the two rooms discovering the lavish looks of the secondary room is an illusion.  The only real item is the chest in the back corner from which they retrieve coins and gems.

Turning their attention to the doors Belgwyn was inspecting prior to their push through the spinning hallway, they find three identical doors that self close in one direction.  Taking their time and pinning the doors open with pitons from Seebo, the group cautiously proceeds.  At the end of the hallway Sariel, still in octopus form, discovers a vast cavern seemingly filled with water that is held back by some sort of transparent material.  Through the barrier she feels uncomfortable heat radiating from the other side.  The narrow passage through the water leads to a platform encompassed with essentially a tent of the same material.  At the far end, just at the edge of her vision, she observes a large chest and boulder.

The party cautiously begins to move across the platform watching for traps and wary of the material holding back the water.  Once the leading members have reached the midpoint, the boulder begins to move as it reveals itself to actually be a huge giant crab.  Taking care to not hit the barrier, though some risk projectiles, the party engages the beast while Sariel drops her octopus form and makes for the chest.  Inside she discovers various items, several smaller sacks, and a large trident sitting on top of the contents.  Shortly after the party, take little to no damage from the crab, are able to defeat it and recover the treasure.  EKIM takes the trident and slowly begins to hear the humming of a sea shanty while no one in the party is able to discern the sound.  After some time a voice subtly asks him if he follows a god of the sea.  Being a sea-elf, EKIM responds that he prays to Deep Sashelas.  The voice seems content with his answer.

Retracing their steps back to the first fork of the dungeon they encountered, the party sets off in a new direction.  The water is only mere inches deep now in the passageways.  Faris is able to haul himself out of a deep section Fionne was unable to stop him from tumbling down.  Shortly after the submerged pit the party finds a hallway lined with copper plates on both sides.  Finding no switch, trigger, or trap the members contemplate the potential dangers.  Losing patient, Sir Reverend Divad can only make it 20 feet down the hallway before he feels his armor heating up uncomfortably.  His hasty return earns him some minor burns.  Seebo is the next to test, stripping himself of his armor and anything metal.  He is able to make the whole length of the hallway unharmed.

Sariel quickly joins Seebo at the small room located at the end of the hallway in the same metalless manner.  The search on this side of the hallway in hopes of finding some sort of way to deactivate the copper plates.  They soon discover a crack in one of the walls that outlines a ‘doorway’ with water seeping out a few inches higher than the level on the floor.  Staring with a knock, both hear shuffling and muffled sounds from the other side.  Slowly increasing their effort in opening the door, Seebo finally resorts to a shatter spell.  As the sound echoes down the hallway in both directions they watch as the rocks finally fall into the room revealing a hidden room to the side of the hallway.  Though a solution to the copper plates is not what they find to their dismay.  On the other side of this hidden wall is a pack of ghouls whose attention immediately is focused on the gnome and eladrin standing before them.
