With their willing prisoner in tow, Tobin’s Revenge strikes out across the High Moor on their way to Waterdeep. Crossing the southwest border they find themselves on the road somewhere between Boareskyr Bridge and Dragonspear Castle. They turn northward to connect with the Trade Way. While their travels across the moor were fairly uneventful, the more well travelled roads prove slightly more hindering. First delayed for five days while they help gather supplies to fix a wagon that was damaged while helping pull Oogway out of a muddy mess. Ignoring an odd display of tribal warriors chanting to a young red dragon that threw up a pile of gold, the party lost another day getting lost in the fog now prevalent between the Misty Forest and the coast as the weather grows cool in the late autumn. Finally, the members need to tend to their own after being surprised at the formation of a force vacuum rift. Only through luck and dwarven strength did the party not lose EKIM who fell unconscious after being pulled into the drift’s core.
Finally reaching Waterdeep, the party once again passes the homestead of the Heartlights, and Fionne is half annoyed, half angered as her sister Apple’s cat stares them down in passing. Approaching the city gates Sariel quickly produces their writ of investigation when questioned why the attempt to bring a tied up dwarf into the city. The captain of the station is quick to placate and offers to deliver Varrum to Lady Silverhand and the rest of the council. Not forgetting the cults blazen attack the last time they were in the city, the group agrees and place Varrum in the custody of the City Guard. Free of their plus one they move through the city towards Trollskull Manor.
Knowing it will take several days for the council to work Varrum and report back, the members of Tobin’s Revenge take a moment to rest up and tend to their own business within the city. They learn that business has been active but slow since the attack by the cult. The property is running in the red and discussions are had on how to bolster trust but nothing is settled. As the second day comes to an end, and the group has gathered for their evening meal in the tavern of Trollskull Manor a ‘non-regular’ walks in and strikes a conversation with Tom at the bar. A few moments later Tom points over to Tobin Revenge’s table and the figure approaches.
With a timid smile an older halfling in spectacles greets those sitting at the table, focused on Miss Fionne. After a moment of astonishment at seeing the ‘young’ Fionne with his own eyes, he finally introduces himself as Roscoe Goodbarrel. Both sides almost immediately ask the other about Seebo, but neither has new information to offer. After some small talk, Roscoe begins to excuse himself leaving Fionne with a plea to at least talk to her parents who are full of regret. He pauses one final time before turning and seeing himself out the door.
Several members noticed that Roscoe slipped something into Oogway’s pocket, Fionne seeing it to be a piece of paper, during that last pause. Before anyone can press him, Oogway retrieves the note and reads it to himself. Finishing the message his whole demeanor changes, and full of excuses and cryptic talk, also excuses himself. Making his way outside to one of the passageways between the buildings of Trollskull Alley, he collapses to the ground in despair. Belgwyn and EKIM are the first to follow and approach with Sariel not far behind.
Oogway laments that he may have made a mistake in joining the group after their success with the cloud giant. He will not divulge details but insists that he needs to meet some people and must do it alone. He is adamant that any of the party that goes with him will die. It doesn’t take long for most of the group to lose interest in Oogway’s predicament and return to the bar with a couple of good lucks thrown in. Sariel is the last to leave asking him to be safe. With this, Oogway polymorphs into a pigeon and flies off to other parts of the city. Landing in an alley somewhere on the border of the Dock and Southern Wards, Oogway drops his polymorph. While taking his bearings and preparing himself mentally for his report, a shadow appears behind him from a darkened doorway.
Not catching it in time, he feels the prick of blade in his back, slowly being pushed deeper into his flesh. It does not take long for him to lose sensation in his legs, followed by his arms, and slowly his face freezes in a grotesque expression. The figure walks around to confront him, face obscured by its hood. It leans in, close to his ear, and says ‘What a nice thing to bring to our dear Xanthar.’ As the figure pulls away Oogway watches as the face morphs in the faint light into a familiar feminine form that he can’t quite place before the effect on his body reaches his mind and the lights go out.
The second morning after Oogway’s departure, their friend Leosin arrives with the preliminary reports on Varrum’s interrogation. While not much new has been gleaned yet, he is confident that her capture will prove beneficial in the end. Asking if they intend to go north in search of the Draakhorn as planned or maybe in a different direction based on their travels. They confirm their intention to travel north as soon as possible and report on some of their observations, mainly the young red dragon they saw along the Trade Way. Leosin takes in all the information and lets them know to be at the docks in three days to board the Frostskimmr under the command of Lerustah Half-face.
During these last few days of rest before moving on, Belgwyn takes a solo journey out to the Undercliff to speak with the Heartlights. In the shadows and unknown to the Belgwyn, Fionne follows close behind. Reaching the Heartlight’s homestead, Belgwyn finds Callie sitting on the porch. Hope flashes across her face before she realizes Belgwyn is alone. They have a conversation about Fionne, Belgwyn pushing for reasons as to why they would sell their daughter into slavery. Riddled with guilt, Callie can only plead that they were doing what they thought would allow Fionne to survive in their darkest times. It was only luck that they turned it around but too late as they had stopped receiving work on Fionne from the guild. In Belgwyn’s accusation of ‘replacing’ Fionne with Apple Callie simply states that when you live in the Field Ward these are the things you come to accept. It wasn’t a replacement, it was moving on.
A sharp retort from a nearby bush gives away Fionne’s presence. Callie looks at her eldest daughter, still not understanding why she is looking at the little girl she turned over two decades ago, with hope. Fionne turns and walks away in anger, shortly followed by Belgwyn. As they reach the property fence, Apple pops out from apparently nowhere and offers Belgwyn a wild flower. She then turns to her sister and offers a second flower. Fionne snaps the flower out of Apple’s hand, throws it on the ground, and stomps on it. Apple’s eyes begin to fill with tears before she tears off towards the house. Belgwyn grabs the scruff of Fionne’s cloak and begins to drag the ‘child’ back to their manor.
The morning of departure arrives and the party makes their way from the North Ward down to the docks, a trip that takes most of the morning on this busy day in the city. Leosin meets them at the pier leading to a medium, single masted longship with heavy reinforcements across its bow. On the deck are supplies for a long journey, including heavy furs and sleds. Leosin reports that nothing new has come from either Varrum or their search for Oogway and asks if there is anything else needed before they go. Not thinking of anything, they wish Leosin luck in his search and move to board the ship. Before they can, he stops them and hesitantly lets them know that there is an additional passenger aboard. He is very hesitant to provide details and only says he thought they should know before boarding.
Making their way up the gangway they find a large pile of what appears to be junk in the middle of the deck with a small gnome quietly sitting atop. Immediately the party recognizes the little gnome as their missing friend Seebo. Happy exchange ensues with gifts presented to some from Seebo. They update him on what has happened since he left them in Parnast. Killing Randall, quickly explaining that he turned on them in the cloud giant’s castle. Killing more dragons. And, seeing Tethren. To their surprise he communicates that he also saw Tethren, though he still has very choice words for him. Ferustah, face half covered to hide the frostbite scars, finally interjects that they must make way if they are to sail with the tide.
It is a three day journey up the coast to Luskan, their first stop for information. It is a peaceful three days on the open ocean with Belgwyn once again tied to a mast for safety. On approach to Luskan, a small boat meets them. Boarding Frostskimmr is a human sailor, most likely a pirate, and female mage. Introducing herself as Zelenn the White, Overwizard of the West, she presents the party with slightly more details on the Draakhorn. Confirming that Maccath the Crimson was the last to go looking for the Draakhorn, she elaborates that she was looking for more than the relic. Maccath was in search of lost knowledge stolen by Arauthator the “Old White Death” during the Rage of Dragons that destroyed the Hosttower more than a century ago. The last time they attempted to scry on Maccath they could only see the wreckage of her expedition’s ship. They are unsure if Maccath is dead or blocked from being scryed in the presence of Arauthator and his unique magical abilities.
Making its way from Luskan, the Frostskimmr begins its search for Arauthator’s iceberg liar. The search is only slightly hindered by an attack of two giant octopus quickly handled though a combination of an enlarged giant octopus (polymorphed Sariel) and a pink and white killer whale (polymorphed Fionne). A plan that turns humorous on a failed attempt of reboarding. This grand feat lands Sariel unceremoniously on her butt after tumbling through the rigging and Fionne, polymorph dropped, exhausted by the bitter cold of the ocean before being levitated out by Dennis.
It is two nights later that the crew spots the iceberg in the distance. Approaching in the early morning, an ice shelf is discovered and anchorage made. Tobin’s Revenge makes their way up a stepped chasm leading from the ice shelf to the plateau 100 feet above the water. Finding a frozen waste land before them, Belgwen and Seebo discover 10 figures frozen in one of the ice ridges near their top of the chasm. Their translator eventually recognizes the dwarf and three Luskar warriors as members of Maccath’s lost expedition while the six other bodies look like some of the local hunters they had seen from distance during their voyage through the ice. Further exploration of the plateau finds the party just in sight of a village. Fionne is turned invisible for some recon and only saved through animal friendship when discovered by loose wolf.
Deciding to approach the village together the group finds themselves surrounded just fifty feet from the first structure as 25 warriors burst from snowdrifts all around. Being approached by a more adorned warrior, a larger warrior, and older female with a staff talks being through the crew member sent as their translator. In talks with the tribe a couple of things come about. A small contingent of the tribe moves off to the top of the chasm to watch the suspicious Frostskimmr anchored below, eventually the party notices that a number of the warriors have disappeared, and finally, the now identified shaman, tells the tale of how they killed the ‘Old White Death’ years ago in an ambush much like they pulled on the group. Pointing out the bone archway at the base of the chasm as evidence, Belgwyn is not convinced that those are bones of a dragon. Before more questions can be asked the chieftain demands that they leave immediately without further consequences. If they refuse to leave he offers a challenge against their tribal champion. Lose and the party must surrender their steel weapons, leave, and never return. Win and they can stay in the village tonight while shaman will answer all their questions. Tobin’s Revenge has a choice to make.
